Julius Nepos
Julius Nepos was born in 430 and given power over the western empire, by his uncle to stop the reign of Glycerius. Even though Leo was the rightful leader he had the right to choose who he thought should divide the empire with. Nepos reigned in 474 over the Italian region, during his reign he tried to take over as much as he could, like Gaul which was in the hands of the Visigoths. Nepos was a good ruler but was unpleasing to the Roman people because of his ties to Leo in the Eastern Empire. Romulus Augustus Romulus was born in 463 and was the son of Orestes. He was a commanding general in the Roman army. Orestes turned on Emperor Nepos and brought his son to the throne in 475, because he was not able to rule because he was a Germanic tribesman. Romulus father ruled through him, his father made all of the decisions even if the coins were in his name. Glycerius Glycerius was born in 420 he was a member of the Imperial Court, before he became and emperor. After the death of Olybrius he rose to the throne, but he was not recognized by the Eastern Emperor Leo. During Glycerius reign there were many battles between the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths. After the invasion of Gaul by the Ostrogoths Glycerius sent some Roman soldiers to prevent the Goths from coming together and attacking Rome. Instead of refusing Glycerius Leo leader of the Eastern empire made Nepos the Emperor of the West and gave him a powerful army. Nepos toke the took this army to Ostia where Glycerius happen to be and he surrendered to Nepos. Olybrius Olybrius was the member of a famous family in Rome in 464 and he married a woman named Placidia who was the daughter of an Earlier Emperor named Valentinian the 3rd. In 461 and 465 a man named Geiseric came to him and tried to make him an Emperor and he refused cause he did not want the fame or the power. In 472 the Emperor of the Eastern Empire Leo wanted Olybrius to go to Italy and help their kingdom with retaliation from the son of the emperor Ricimer. Olybrius and Ricimer started negotiations and Olybrius was made Emperor against his will. Later on Anthemius was killed and Olybrius became the Emperor Anthemius Anthemius was born in 420 and he became the first Emperor of the Western Empire to be spoke of by the Emperor of the East Leo. Anthemius had many people of power to pledge there loyalty to him like Ricimer he was a strong military figure who happen to be Anthemius son as mentioned in the earlier paragraph. Marcellinus was a strong general as well but he was a little un-loyal. Him and Riothamus marched into battle but were defeated very fast and so was Roman's Navy because of a bad leader in battle. In 470 Anthemius was killed by what he thought was some potion made by an enemy. |
